What You Need to Know
Do you have a strong working knowledge of the Spanish language? If so, you can put it to great use with this intensive seven-week management internship. You’ll be responsible for completing real projects typical of those assigned to management graduates in entry-level positions. Some firms may rotate the student through several departments, while others may emphasize a more focused experience in a single department.
Sponsor companies have included exchanges & finance firms, consulting firms, brokerage firms, media-related companies, real estate, marketing, transportation and tourism firms. Placements are confirmed during the first week of the program. Past sponsors include IBM, NCR, Saint Gobein, AIAF, and Field Mateu, among others.
Some potential placements for 2009 include Sylvania, KLM, Solucion, and E-ntrena, to name a few. Every effort will be made to place you in a position that matches your primary career interest, although this cannot always be guaranteed.
Interns are expected to adapt to the working environment and regulations of their firm, adhering to the hours required of full-time employees. Your work assignment and experience will be unique—but every student will gain the invaluable experience of performing meaningful work in a financial or commercial environment.
Interns are also required to attend weekly evening seminars/social events that will feature industry guest speakers/lecturers. These seminars will provide invaluable networking opportunities as well as access to the insights and experience of business leaders in Spain. Management internship students are encouraged to consider registering for the course, SOM 354 Managing in a Global Setting, offered as part of the Madrid Summer Session program. This would allow students to receive 6 credits during the summer session.
Field Trip
There will be guided study tours to Barcelona and Andalucia arranged by SU Abroad for all SU Abroad summer programs in Spain. The cost is included in the program fee.
You must register for either three (3) or six (6) credits.
For undergraduate students, this can be either: (3) credits of experience credit (BUA 470) and 3 credits of independent study (BUA 490). In some cases, undergraduate students can register for 3 or 6 credits of experience credit (BUA 470) or 6 credits of independent study (BUA 490). Consult with an advisor to determine how your credits will fit into your program.
The same options are available to graduate students and their course numbers reflect graduate level work (BUA 690 or BUA 670).
Although BUA is the course prefix listed, students normally have the option to register for equivalent courses in their major area (for example, MAR 470, or MAR 490). In this event, permission of a major advisor may be required. Courses may not be audited and full duration internships are mandatory.
Experience Credit (BUA 470, 3 credits, undergraduate) and Independent Study (BUA 490, 3 credits, undergraduate) or Experience Credit (BUA 670, 3 credits, graduate) or Independent Study (BUA 690, 3 credits, graduate). Students can only get a maximum of 3 credits total for their internship experience. Students registered for work experience credit must record their daily management activities and document the educational nature of their assignments. A final report is due July 13, 2009. Students registered for independent study credit are required to complete an area specific research paper due on or before July 13, 2009. It is not unusual for this paper to flow directly from the assignments that the student conducted for the internship sponsor. Graduate students are required to write a more extensive paper on a more complex topic.
Internship placements are competitive and admission to this program is based upon the availability of positions that match the student's experience and interest. Please contact SU Abroad for more information.
Participants must have completed at least two years of college in a program that includes management courses. Although most interns are business or management students, serious and highly motivated students with other majors will be given full consideration. Graduate students in management disciplines are eligible for the program after completing one year of graduate work. An advanced knowledge of Spanish is required.
Host firms will likely expect interns to perform management analyses using a personal computer. Students will be supervised, but they are expected to take a professional, independent approach to problem solving and job responsibility.
Students arrange and pay for their own round-trip transatlantic flight to Madrid. Transportation for program-related study tours is arranged by SU Abroad and is included in the program fee.
