Florence, Italy

Syracuse University in Florence (SUF) announces the spring 2009 Coluccio Salutati Award winners.

Coluccio Salutati is best known as the skilled Renaissance leader who deftly preserved Florentine independence. His great love of learning and his capacity to wield his knowledge for the benefit of his fellow citizens inspired SUF to institute the Coluccio Salutati merit award. The award is intended to inspire students to aim for the highest levels of academic achievement and deep integration into the Italian culture. It is the highest recognition SUF bestows upon its students.

This semester, a total of 48 students were nominated by their professors, and then invited to submit an essay related to their experience in Italy. The essays were judged by a committee of faculty members according to two criteria: the degree to which students have challenged themselves to enter into and understand the culture of their host country, and the literary quality of the composition.

The spring 2009 Coluccio Salutati Award winners are:

  • Devin Moeser (University of Colorado, Boulder)
  • Chloe Southern (Brown University)
  • Melissa Young (Syracuse University)
  • Sarah K. Walmsley (Williams College)
